So, when he spotted the opportunity to join Kellen Homes as an apprentice bricklayer, he jumped at the chance. Having already spent two years at college learning practical building skills he was keen to join the Kellen Homes apprenticeship scheme and is now working towards his Level Two apprenticeship as a bricklayer.
Mckenzie combines four days of practical work experience on site with one day a week of classroom learning at City Skills at Salford City College. And he’s already discovered what a highly skilled job bricklaying is.
He said: “Building work runs in the family, and I knew I wanted to be a bricklayer. I was delighted to get the apprenticeship with Kellen and I’m learning so much. Bricklaying is very skilled and the conditions have to be just right. I spend a lot of time checking the weather forecast now!”
And he added: “It’s so good to learn the trade from people who have been doing it for years and I get lots of support. It’s great to earn, while you learn.”
This week is National Apprenticeship Week, a government-run initiative to bring together business and apprentices showcasing the economic and social boost that apprenticeships give to individuals, businesses and the wider economy.
