The 17-year-old is working toward his Level One Apprenticeship qualification with Kellen Homes as one of their latest cohort of apprentices and really enjoys being part of the skilled team that is building new homes across the North West.
He explains: “The work is very varied, and we go from site to site where we are needed but all of the houses are timber framed so we can be the first on site to start bringing the house out of the ground and then just a few days later be back to put on the roof. It’s great to see your hard work transformed into a place that people actually get to live. You feel like you are making a difference.”
Luke, who lives in Salford, completed a one-year joinery course at Salford City College before applying to the Kellen Homes apprenticeship scheme and being accepted on the programme.
He now spends four days a week on site learning alongside skilled and experienced Kellen Homes’ joiners, and completes one day of studying at City Skill, Salford City College.
For Luke it’s the perfect combination. He said: “We are learning both on the job and in the classroom and being paid to do it. It’s the best of both worlds.”
Luke’s aspiration is to gain his qualification and become a great joiner.
